Dear followers and friends!
I am over-the-moon-excited to announce that ‘UKnadian’ will be presented in TACTICS – Theatre Arts Collective: The Independent Series 2017 season as a work-in-progress showing at Arts Court Theatre. SHOWS:
Tuesday, May 2nd at 6:30-7:30pm + Friday, May 5th, 6:30-7:30pm
A big thank you to the folks behind TACTICS, with a special mention to Artistic Director and Series Curator Bronwyn Steinburg, for believing in this project and creating space in this year’s beautifully full line-up!
This year’s TACTICS will see two concurrent types of Series. In their own words:
‘In TACTICS 2017, we’ve got two mainstage productions, five works in progress by local creators and a series of interdisciplinary special events. TACTICS creates a platform for local indie artists to push theatrical limitations, share their stories with more of the community, and dream big with their art.’
I am delighted to be sharing the stage with other incredible Ottawa-based artists that I know and hold dear, such as Jacqui DuToit, Cart Before the Horse Theatre, and Lucila Al Mar (for her debut album release). I am also equally excited to be sharing the stage with artists who are new to me; indeed this year’s TACTICS is a fantastic opportunity for local artists to get to know each other and inspire our community’s work. For this year’s TACTICS, ‘UKnadian’ will be featured in‘TACTICS Series 2’ as a part of the ‘Workshop Series’ alongside HOMEless by Evolution Theatre, and Wanting by Madeleine Boyes-Manseau (which is beautifully similarly themed through ancestry and Grandmothers!), and Mainstage Series piece girls!girls!girls! by Cart Before the Horse Theatre. Already we have had a Artist Retreat Weekend where we shared our process thus far, included games to generate material, read scripts aloud, and generally enjoyed each other’s company. It was wonderful to spend time together, and get inspired by each others work. I feel blessed to be a part of Ottawa’s vibrant performing arts community!

As for how ‘UKnadian’ fits into this Workshop Series, I had mentioned in a previous blog post that I’m creating this piece over the course of three years. I’m giving myself a long process of development in many stages so as to best honour my Grandmothers and mother, and to give myself time to put a lot of thought, research, and love into this self-choreographed solo. Being a part of the Workshop Series is a perfect opportunity for the work at this first stage, as I can create without the pressure of a ‘polished’ piece of work, and receive vital feedback from the audience and other artists. I openly invite anyone of you who come to the show to approach me with your reflections; be it thoughts, feelings, sensations, or new ideas!
All in all, it is wonderful to have this work be recognized by my #OttArts community, and to have an opportunity to share this stage of ‘UKnadian’ with you. Please go and follow TACTICS on Facebook and Twitter to keep up with the developments of all these fantastic pieces of art from the Ottawa arts community, and of course UKnadian on Twitter, Facebook and myself on Instagram @millierosegriffin.
With love, Amelia
